The Diagnostic Procedure for Abnormal Tissue

Biopsies are small surgical diagnostic procedures designed to remove abnormal soft or hard tissues. Typically, this tissue will be submitted to a special lab that examines and identifies the cause of the abnormality. Dr. Bonomo will advise you of what if any, additional treatment is necessary.

There are two different types of biopsies:

Diagnostic Biopsies
Surgical Biopsies

Diagnostic Oral Biopsies

Examining Tissue Samples

Diagnostic biopsies involve the removal of a small abnormal tissue sample for examination. This type of biopsy usually involves less invasive techniques and is often guided by CT scans or MRIs for success.

Surgical Oral Biopsies

Removing Tissue for Detailed Examination

Surgical biopsies involve the removal of a larger piece of tissue or an entire tumor through a surgical procedure. The goal of a surgical biopsy is to gather a large enough tissue sample to determine the nature of the abnormality. This type of biopsy is typically performed under anesthesia in an exam room.
