Achieve Comfort and Relaxation During Your Dental Procedure
At Bonomo Periodontics, we understand that dental procedures can be stressful. For that reason, we offer three levels of sedation dentistry to help improve your pain management in dentistry to help you relax and take the stress out of dentistry.
Dr. Bonomo is specially trained in sedation dentistry, having completed a three-year specialty residency with a six-month rotation in hospital anesthesia.
What Types of Sedation Are Used?
At Bonomo Periodontics, we use three types of anesthesia in dentistry. Below are our sedation methods, including conscious sedation. We offer three levels of anesthesia listed below.
Intravenous (IV) Sedation
IV sedation is one of the best ways to ensure comfort and pain management during a periodontal procedure. This technique allows you to sleep through your surgery or procedure then wake up when it is over with no memory of the event. IV sedation is very safe during dental procedures and your vitals are monitored continuously.
IV sedation is the highest level of sedation we offer and involves the patient being completely unconscious. Because of this you will need to bring a driver with you to your procedure.
Nitrous Oxide Sedation
Nitrous oxide (or laughing gas) sedation involves patients breathing in an odorless gas prior to their procedure. Nitrous oxide gives a mild sedative effect and helps relieve anxiety before the procedure. This type of sedation does not last as long and is safe for patients who need to drive themselves home from their appointment.
Nitrous oxide sedation is the lightest and simplest level of sedation. It only takes between five and ten minutes after the procedure to completely recover.
Oral Sedation
Oral sedation involves the use of medication, in the form of a pill, that is prescribed for you prior to your procedure. Dr. Bonomo's staff will instruct you on how and when to take the medication to ensure maximum comfort during the procedure.
You will likely be instructed to take this medication about an hour before your procedure and you will be required to bring a driver with you.
Oral sedation usually lasts between 2 and 6 hours and is a deeper level of sedation than nitrous oxide, but not as deep as IV sedation.
You will not be unconscious, but it will help you be relaxed during the procedure to relieve your anxiety.
